Our Inspiration
Dr. F.A. Ramlall & Mrs Edith Ramlall
Ramlall’s Investment Inc. was named in memory of our Father Dr. F. A Ramlall who was a trusted physician serving Berbice patients both as a family physician as well as establishing the first private hospital
Dr. Ramlall (1926-2008) was a teacher at the Albion CM School before leaving Guyana to study Medicine. In 1949 he was admitted to Mankato a State teachers College in Minnesota and then won the first of 10 scholarships to the University of Minnesota where he graduated with a B.A, and BSc and then his MD. He served his internship at Toledo Hospital Ohio and then returned to Guyana in 1958 to practice medicine. Although others chose to remain in the U.S where they pursued lucrative careers – he was a Patriot for Guyana and chose to return there to tend to the poor and ill in Guyana.
He first served in the Government’s Public Hospital in Georgetown before launching into private practice to serve his fellow Berbicians. In 1967, he opened up Berbice’s first private 25-bed Hospital equipped with the most medical facilities including an operating room. For many years, Dr. Ramlall was the only Berbice physician allowed to provide medical clearances to the US. Embassy in Georgetown Guyana.
Dr. Ramlall was also very involved in the local community including serving as Chairman of the Board of Governors of Vryman’s Erven Government School as well as President of the Berbice Lions Club.
In 1974, he immigrated to the US to join his family and after a few years in private practice, served at the VA Hospitals in Massachusetts and then Washington D.C. from 1978 to 1996. In 1996 he retired to New York but went into private practice in the Richmond Hill area of the City, continuing to serve many Guyanese until 2005 when he finally retired to Virginia.
Dr. F.A Ramlall is still fondly remembered by many Guyanese, many of who’s parents, relatives and friends were former patients. Although he was grateful and loved being in the U.S, his hidden dream was to return to Guyana later in life. Our investment is the first step in fulfilling that dream.
